My Mom’s Journey from Scotland to America in 1924

A castle in western Scotland similar to what the one 3 miles from Kilbirnie would have looked like.

Current main st. in Kilbirnie. Population around 6,000, as it was in the early 1920’s.

The Auld Kirk church is one of the oldest in Scotland still in use. Located next to my mom’s neighborhood.

The small graveyard behind the Auld Kirk.

The Kilbirnie Railway Station opened in 1906.

My mom, Mary (May) Jackson Prior was an only child that was born in the small town of Kilbirnie, Scotland, in 1922. Her family was poor and lived in a tiny one-bedroom house. When her father lost his job at the local steel mill in 1924, he moved the family to Flint, Michigan and found a good-paying job, working on the assembly line at General Motors.

After travel to the Kilbirnie area and additional research, I will be writing about the Scottish homeland they left behind and the move to the new one in America.

The full story will be available in future publications. I also give presentations/readings of various works (mine and others) for organizations.
